Our school entered this competition with a Mad Hatters Top Hat basket design. Various children contributed to the design, and it has been chosen as a finalist.
Part of the rules was that only recycled materials could be used to make the container – we searched in the shed and found an old tub container and rim to use. The children grew plants from small plugs purchased and children helped plant up the Top Hat. Each class was given a plant to look after for the entry so the whole school got involved. Over the next month the basket was planted up by various classes and cared for with a variety of beautiful plants.
At the Gardeners World Show, each school will have a display board alongside their basket, with a photographic diary on how the basket was planted and cared for over the past two months. The school logo will be on the board alongside our sponsor Aldi – who have now provided plants – we are grateful for this so that any last minute additions can be made!
The Hat has been carefully looked after in time to present it to the show on 11th June. The basket will be taken to the Show and the baskets will be judged by the public and voted on at the show. Press coverage will take place the week before the show. Winning entries will receive Garden Vouchers and the schools mentioned in the NEC Gardeners World Show Guide and on the RHS Website.
