An Invitation to Westminster Abbey

12 March 2012

We were very proud to be the only primary school in the West Midlands to be invited to attend this years' Royal Commonwealth Observance at Westminster Abbey in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. The Observance was the first of Her Majesty's official engagements in her Diamond Jubilee Year.

Children from Years 5 and 6 entered a competition to have their work published on the Commonwealth Society's Diamond Jubilee Timeline. We were lucky to have several entries published with three children winning the chance to go to London, with Mr Tipping and Mrs Shakespeare, to take part in the Commonwealth Observance.

Westminster Abbey was fascinating and huge! We took part in a multi-cultural service with the theme 'Connecting Cultures'. The flags of 53 Commonwealth countries were paraded through the Abbey at the start of the service and there were performances by Rufus Wainwright, Hugh Masekela and the Descarga Dance Company. It was really spectacular.

On the following Wednesday, we were invited to the Radio WM studios, to talk to Jo Malin about our wonderful experience.
