Commitment Mass

8 October 2016

"You are a chosen race, the holy nation, God's own people. Chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God who called you into His own marvellous light."
1 Peter 2:9

On Saturday the 8th October, the children and parents of Year 3 and Year 6, expressed their ongoing commitment to their faith by joining with the parish in a touching and joyful Mass; celebrated by Father John at St Thomas More Church.

The children of both year groups helped support the celebration, sharing the readings and leading the psalm. Father explained the significance of the year, and the vital role that parents, parish and school play in preparing the children for their sacraments. This year these children will share the wonderful experiences of receiving the Body of Christ, as spiritual food, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit which grow to sustain faith.

The beginning of these important sacramental preparation journeys, was marked by a relighting of the children's Baptismal candles. This flame, representing the flame of faith given by their family, to make them members of the Church. Their Baptismal Promises were renewed. Then parents and children made solemn commitment promises; to prepare diligently at home and school, and to attend Mass regularly. This being a sign of their dedication and a means of strengthening personal faith, through practice.

As the flames were extinguished, we could tell by the joyful prayer and song that this promise burned in their hearts.
