Our Design and Technology Curriculum Intent
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of context, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Working in this discipline, children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
We are keen for our children to have hands on experiences and to learn from experts. We have a STEM group after school who do things like fix bikes and make bird boxes for forest school. We have whole school projects, such as making kites, and we work with Dyson so that the children can look at product design. We offer a cooking club after school, which is always really popular and we make links with secondary schools so that the children in upper school can experience learning in a secondary school and to enable them to use their resources. We ensure that our children hear from women in the field of engineering, to inspire all our children.
At STM, we follow the Design and Technology curriculum of Kapow.
